SAILOR FOOD - STILL A FAVORITE ON OUR BOAT When Hunter, Susie's then 4-year old grandson, sailed on Catch The Wind from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas with the Baja Ha Ha Rally Class of 2005, he made a comment when he was served his first meal onboard, "I don't like that." Grandma Susie explained that if he was going to be a real sailor, he had to learn to eat sailor food. He asked what sailor food was and he was told, "Whatever Grandma fixes." That means one meal is fixed for a crew of 5 and sometimes it might be someone's favorite, but everyone eats it anyway because they are sailors. Hunter never complained about another meal and ate what was served to him. He might eat more if it was his favorite, just like Sam might eat more if it was his favorite. And Grandma always kept his favorite snacks - dried cranberries, cashews and cheese cubes - to have between sailor food meals. When Hunter came to visit us in the Sea of Cortez during June 2008, he still remembered this lesson. Although his eating habits had changed a lot and he was then 6 years old, he responded to a query about whether he liked a particular meal or not, "It's sailor food," and shrugged his shoulders. He ate what he was served, but refused seconds. Cooking on board the boat is sometimes an adventure. We will share some of our favorite "sailor food" recipes. Some can even be fixed in your home galley. If you have a favorite boat recipe, send it to us and we'll share it on our website. Send as an attachment to or in the body of an email to |
