September 2009
Maricopa, Arizona and Hermosillo, Mexico
Susie’s right knee revision surgery went very well. On Sept 9 we returned to Hermosillo for a
3rd gamma scan and it was determined that all the infection in the right knee prosthesis was
gone. Sept 10 she had the surgery with Dr Inigo. After only one night in the hospital, she was
discharged the following evening back to our hotel room at City Express. After several days of
physical therapy in the room and follow-up visits from the nurse for wound checks, the doctor
said she could go back to Arizona. So on Sept 16 we started back. We took the circulation
pump and hooked it up to the inverter, to keep the swelling down as much as possible while
Susie sat in the front seat. We only went halfway that night, stopping in Nogales after we
crossed the border so she could rest. The next day we continued on. We stopped for lunch at
Olive Garden in Casa Grande, and then we went in two clothing stores to see if Susie could find
a skirt to cover her “frankenstein’ staples. No luck, but the good news was that Susie was able
to get a little exercise. After two stores, she was “done” so we went on to Maricopa.
On Sept 22 Susie started out-patient physical therapy here in Maricopa, 3 times a week. She
was doing so well that Sam decided to return to San Diego and make arrangements to get
Catch The Wind back up to San Francisco. Susie was even able to drive the car.
So on Sept 25 flew to San Diego and found some crew to help make the trip up the coast.
Although Sam has single-handed the boat many times, Susie did not want him to make the trip
alone. He found two people who were willing to help out, wanting the off-shore experience.
Sam got the boat ready for sailing again, after 2 months at the dock.
As of Sept 30, Susie is doing very well. She can drive, walk up stairs, do her own laundry and
prepare meals for herself at the house in Maricopa (while Mom is visiting in Pennsylvania). Sam
is planning to leave around Oct 3 or 4 from San Diego, and should have the boat tied up in our
berth space (through Feb 2010 at least) at Richmond Yacht Club by the 3rd week in October.
He plans to make a leisurely trip, harbor-hopping and stopping at some of our favorite ports:
Dana Point, Newport Beach, Marina Del Rey, Santa Barbara. Susie is sorry to miss this part of
the trip, but we felt that even though she is recovering quickly, an ocean voyage was not in her
best interest health-wise.
Future Plans
After Sam gets the boat to San Francisco, he will fly back to Arizona. Then Susie and Sam will
drive back to California and start the next adventure – whatever that might be.
