Log Book
Aug 2009
Maricopa, Arizona and Hermosillo, Mexico
We won’t bore you with all the medical details, but in summary: Susie’s right knee was found to
be infected while we were in San Diego. We decided to seek medical treatment in Hermosillo
with the surgeon who did her left knee. He offered two options for resolution. (1) Immediately
do surgery to remove the infected prosthesis and implant a temporary clay prosthesis with
antibiotic interface, then when infection is gone do another surgery and implant the final
revision prosthesis. This is considered the “gold standard” of treatment and in the US medical
field usually the ONLY option. (2) Attempt to treat the infection with a regimen of supplements
and oral antibiotics. If successful, the temporary surgery could be avoided. If not successful,
proceed to the first option.
Avoiding surgery when possible is a good thing. We decided on Option 2 and after 3 weeks of
swallowing over 50 pills per day, the infection in Susie’s right knee was found to be 80% clear of
infection. So she is continuing with this treatment, in hopes that it will be entirely clear and she
can proceed to the final revision prosthesis surgery in Sept.
We made two trips to Hermosillo in August. The first was for an initial gamma scan to see how
much infection was in the right knee. The second was for a re-scan, when it was determined
that the treatment was working. While not in Mexico, we stayed with Susie’s mother in Maricopa,
Arizona, which is only about 8 hours drive from Hermosillo.
So nothing going on as far as “cruising” is concerned. Catch The wind is safely tied up at
Chula Vista Marina in Southern California. We are playing cards several times a week at the
community center in Province (where Susie’s mother lives) and just relaxing. Susie needs to
stay rested and take her supplements and pills to prepare for surgery.
Future Plans
Susie’s knee is priority. When she is recovered, we will return to Catch The Wind and then
begin moving up the coast of California, towards San Francisco Bay. We plan to be
“landlubbers” for a while. And Susie and Sam can’t wait until Susie can dance again!
