Hermosillo
Susie’s left knee replacement surgery was January 6. We drove (in our “new” car) from San
Carlos to Hermosillo the day before surgery, and Susie met her surgical team: the surgeon Dr
Inigo, the anathesiologist, the assistant surgeon, the surgical nurse and the physical therapist.
We checked into City Express Hotel for our stay. She was in the hospital for only two nights as
planned. In the hospital, she had wonderful care and visits from the physical therapist to begin
moving the new knee. What a change from the right knee surgery in La Paz. Everything about
this surgery was better than what happened last time. After check out, the nurse, the physical
therapist and three of her doctors visited Susie at our hotel room. She made wonderful
progress and continues to do well with the left knee. The right knee is another story altogether,
for another time.
San Carlos
We stayed in Hermosillo until January 20 and drove back to San Carlos, where we checked into
the Adlai Hotel. Susie was still doing a daily exercise routine and was not yet ready to get back
on the boat. But amazingly enough, on January 26 she was able – with difficulty – to get onto
the boat and inside the cabin. Again, what a difference from the right knee experience. We
packed up and got ready to drive to Hermosillo.
Hermosillo
January 27 we drove back to Hermosillo. Susie got 38 staples removed from her left knee and
the surgeon said everything looked good. No open wound issues this time. That evening she
went to see the physical therapist, who said she was making wonderful progress and keep up
the good work with the daily exercise routine. So we stayed one night at City Express and made
ready to drive up to Arizona the next day.
Arizona
January 28 we made the long drive from Hermosillo to Arizona. Susie was able to sit in the front
seat for the entire trip, without too much discomfort. We arrived at Susie’s parents home in
Maricopa that evening. The primary reason for coming to Arizona was to allow Susie recovery
time before moving back onto the boat. In Maricopa, she could use the pool to continue
therapy on the left knee. Sam made arrangements to fly from Phoenix to Oakland, to visit all his
Kaiser doctors and get some medical checkups.
Maricopa
So we are in Maricopa here at the end of January. Susie continues to work out in the pool,
almost daily, and do her daily exercise routine. Sam managed to get the car we purchased in
Mexico registered in Arizona with clear title, so all the papers are in order. The boat is safely
berthed at Marina Real in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. Hopefully Susie will continue to get
better, Sam will get an all clear from his doctors in February, and we can move back onto the
boat in March and resume our cruising life style.
