Ventura. We returned to the boat yard from our road trip Sept 5 to find the boat had
been splashed and re-hauled and put up on blocks again. After the work at the yard was
completed, someone failed to properly re-connect a hose under the sink in the head and
water got into the boat. When a workman noticed the boat was sitting lower in the water a
few hours after it was splashed, 6 inches of water over the cabin floor boards was
discovered and the boat was immediately re-hauled. The yard pumped out all the water
and started drying the boat and our personal belongings. We must say that they were
very honest and cooperative with us, and worked with us to assess the damage. Ventura
Harbor Boat Yard rectified all remotely suspect or potential problems: replacement of all
wiring and switches that may have gotten wet; oil and filter change; new starter motor for
the engine; and new paint for the floor boards (which were in disgusting condition even
before the water intrusion). They did not want us to have problems even several years in
the future that might turn out to be related to the incident, so they probably did more than
was necessary, but that’s OK. They were willing to put Sam up in a hotel (but he preferred
to stay on another boat in the water at the yard which was available) and paid for him to
have a rental car and covered his meals. Susie was planning to go to Phoenix (more
about that later) on Sept 11, so she changed her tickets and went Sept 6. Sam stayed in
Ventura and saw to the repairs and did some projects of his own on the boat and Susie
went to Phoenix. We were finally back together on Sept 23 and spent another week
getting things ready to leave Ventura.
Phoenix. Susie’s mother had knee replacement surgery and her parents asked that she
come and help them out during Mom’s recovery. That worked out very well and Mom is
doing very well. She plans to have the left knee done in a few months, so Susie may be
returning (most likely from Mexico) to Phoenix early in the year 2008.
Santa Barbara. We left Ventura on Sept 30 for Santa Barbara and dropped the hook
near Stern’s Wharf. That night we discovered a water leak, so decided the next day to pull
into a slip in Santa Barbara Harbor and resolve the problem. More about that – and our
short trip to Santa Cruz Island – next month.
