Log Book
April 2007
April was spent in La Paz. John Paul Watts left us the first week of April to join the delivery crew of
the catamaran New Focus from La Paz back to San Francisco. Leah Pepe left the same week to fly
back to San Francisco – to WORK (that four letter word). Sam and Susie remained at home aboard
Catch The Wind in beautiful La Paz, Mexico.
Sam took care of all his postponed dental work, which was one of the primary reasons we had
planned to stay in La Paz. The work appears to be very good and it was done for a very reasonable
fee. Susie had a bump on her finger investigated, which after x-rays to eliminate a bone problem,
turned out to be an embedded and encapsulated foreign object (probably a wood or metal splinter) –
gee how can anyone get such a thing on a boat! A little local surgery and 3 stitches took care of
that. We also applied for and received our FM3 ‘s which will allow us more time in Mexico than the
standard tourist visa. Susie played Mexican Train dominoes on Monday’s and Thursday’s and
sometimes Sam played as well. Sam installed a new hose on the toilet so it stopped leaking all over
the bathroom floor, and installed an oil filter on the watermaker so now we can use it while we are at
anchor in an area where the salt water it not as clean as it is in the open ocean. And we did alll this
in addition to laundry and grocery shopping.
One of the events we enjoyed while in La Paz was Bayfest, held at a bar/restaurant on the beach
near the anchorage where we are staying. This event is sponsored by Club Cruceros in La Paz. Susie
played bocce ball, tug-o-war and Mexican Train dominoes – she even won 2nd place in the Mexican
Train Tournament. We both attended some of the seminars, including watermakers, hurricane
preparedness, and cruising in the Sea of Cortez. We got a lot of useful information and had lots of
fun. If you want to see pictures of Susie and Sam in the various events of Bayfest, you can go to the
Club Cruceros website and check it out at http://www.clubcruceros.org. You’ll recognize us.
The report of our adventures in May should be more interesting, as we should be away from La Paz
and visiting the various anchorages north of La Paz in the Sea of Cortez.
